MLB Trade Rumors: 5 early trade candidates for Cubs
After swinging for the fences with the first couple of players, let’s take a look at an easy fit for the Cubs. Travis Wood and Clayton Richard have their appeal, but as the only left-handed pitchers in the Cubs’ bullpen, they leave you wanting more.
Both Wood and Richard are converted starters who are great to have around, but they are not really left-handed specialists. Probably the most obvious need on the Cubs’ roster is for a left-handed relief pitcher who specializes in getting left-handed hitters out. Ryan Buchter has been fantastic for the San Diego Padres this season and would be a great fit for the Cubs.
The 29-year-old Buchter has been a little wild, but he has only given up eight hits and one earned run in 15 relief appearances this season. He has been particularly tough against lefties, not giving up a run and only one hit against them in his 7.1 innings of work.
The 13-19 Padres are not expected to compete, and should give away Buchter for little return. He is not a household name, but the left-handed specialist could fill an important role for the Cubs in their bullpen.
