J.R. Smith might very well end up playing a role in Space Jam 2. Both parties have mutual interest and it’s good to be friends with LeBron James apparently.

According to TMZ Sports, Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard J.R. Smith might be appearing in Space Jam 2 with Cavaliers teammate LeBron James. Smith’s representative Daniel Hazan is quoted as saying, “There is mutual interest.”

While at first glance it doesn’t make a ton of sense for a great role player like Smith to appear in a major motion picture like many assume Space Jam 2 will become, the belief is that the often-vilified sharpshooter could very easily play a role as one of the Monstars from the first Space Jam.

This would mean that Smith’s debut on the silver screen would come in the form of a voice over. In all likelihood, he will probably have a role in this movie as his relationship with James in Cleveland is as tight as ever.

Smith to some degree does arguably the best job of epitomizing the antagonistic role on the Cavaliers. His lethal three-point stroke can completely devastate opposing defenses. He is a fantastic role player and his on-court attitude would probably do just fine on the silver screen in terms of a voice over.

Usually these type of cameos are reserved for other All-Star caliber players in the league, something that Smith doesn’t qualify as this stage of his career. Will James bring in players on his level of excellence to the project? That seems certain, but those players would have to bring something interesting to the silver screen like Charles Barkley, Muggsy Bogues, and Shawn Bradley did in the original Space Jam.

While it seems like a lock that Smith will appear in Space Jam 2, keep an eye out for other NBA players to join what will probably be a star-studded cast of basketball talent. Outside of Smith, the best players to bring on would have to be Blake Griffin or any of the five appearing in State Farm’s Meet the Hoopers campaign (Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, Kevin Garnett, Kevin Love, and Damian Lillard).
