NHL Playoffs, Capitals vs. Penguins Game 6: Full highlights, final score and more
The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Washington Capitals 4-3 in overtime in Game 6 to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
An epic Game 6 at Consol Energy Center that went to overtime ended after Nick Bonino scored in overtime to help the Pens advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Washington Capitals found themselves in a 3-0 hole in the second period. That’s when they started an epic comeback. The comeback started with a power play goal by T.J. Oshie while he was falling down and Washington’s second goal came courtesy of Justin Williams. Their third goal came via John Carlson after the Caps got three consecutive power plays off of delay of game penalties by the Penguins.
Pittsburgh got two goals from Phil Kessel and a goal from Carl Hagelin in regulation, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Capitals from coming back. Matthew Murray, who had been stellar all series long, allowed three goals in just over 20 minutes to allow the Caps to force overtime. Caps goaltender Braden Holtby was stellar after a rough start, especially in the third period. He didn’t allow a goal after the Pens scored two goals on a four minute power player after Brooks Orpik got a double minor for high sticking.
Three stars
Bonino scored the game-winning goal in overtime to help the Pens advance. He was great all series long and it’s appropriate that he ended the series.
Kessel was outstanding with two goals and an assist on Bonino’s game winner. He was the Penguins’ best forward all series long and it seems like he has finally found a team that appreciates his elite talent. Kessel could be on his way to a Conn Smythe Trophy.
Murray was outstanding when he needed to be, stopping numerous chances once the Caps tied the game.
