Borussia Dortmund want to know if midfielder Ilkay Gundogan wants to stay with the club.

Borussia Dortmund may have lost star center back Mats Hummels to rival Bayern Munich, but they want to keep the rest of the squad together. Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been rumored to have a deal in place with Pep Guardiola’s new team, Manchester City. The German reportedly met with City’s director of sport in Amsterdam in March.

Gundogan has since re-injured himself in training and will miss Euro 2016, with no timetable announced for his return. This snag has left the German international in limbo. Does he try to make the move to Manchester City, or does he fight to regain fitness with Dortmund?

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke mentioned to Sky Sports that Gundogan and the club have been in talks about whether he should stay or go, but there is no official word on whether Gundogan will remain at the Westfalenstadion.

Watzke also mentioned he wants a bigger commitment from Gundogan, and to sign him to a long-term deal in the hope they can keep an important part of their midfield at the club.

If Gundogan leaves for England, the club will have holes to fill in defense and in midfield. Watzke did say the club does not have a problem with players leaving, and respects all the decisions made, but one has to think that he and the club’s staff would like it if they can keep star players and continue to compete with Bayern Munich.
