Former Yankees and Astros infielder Brandon Laird won $10,000 and free beer for a year.
Brandon Laird had a three-year career in the majors that he split between the New York Yankees and the Houston Astros. Laird, perhaps most famous for being the brother of long-time catcher Gerald Laird, has a new claim to fame out in Japan where he now plays baseball for the Nippon Ham Fighters. He’s the guy who won hit a sign to win $10,000 and free beer from Kirin Beer for a year.
His solo home run helped his team beat the Orix Buffaloes 4-0. Laird is a very generous man because he will apparently share the beer with his teammates. That should make him quite the hit in the Fighters’ clubhouse. Kirin Beer is one of the most popular beers in Japan. Considering how expensive it is to live in Japan, a year of free beer is quite valuable.
Laird spent one season with the Yankees and two with the Astros. In 53 career games, Laird had a .193 batting average with a .255 on base percentage and a .370 slugging percentage. He hit six home runs and had 16 runs batted in during his brief major league career that featured just 127 at-bats.
