Chicago White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier gets stitches after attempting to make a play in the stands.
White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier reminded everyone on Wednesday that there are no such things as routine plays when a player tries to make a catch in the stands.
Frazier, who had just homered in the top of the inning, tried to make a play in the bottom half by leaping into the stands trying to catch a pop up from Prince Fielder.
He had a good jump on the ball and made a glove first diving effort, pushing back a Rangers fan and knocking him and his popcorn over before flying face first into the first row of seats. Frazier didn’t make the catch and came up in obvious pain, covering his mouth with his glove and running as fast as could down the stairs into the dugout.
Announcers Steve Stone and Hawk Harrelson were asking each other “did he make the catch?” when they saw Frazier cover up his face with his glove, both adding, “he’s hurt.”
After the play, Hawk Harrelson announced that he was going to go down to the field and check on Frazier, leaving Stone alone in the booth to continue calling the game.
When he returned to the booth, Harrelson said, “I’m no doctor, but it appears he’ll be okay,” A White Sox Twitter account later released an update on Frazier saying he “left today’s game with a laceration to his lower lip. He required five stitches. He’s listed as day-to-day. The Rangers came from behind to beat the White Sox 6-5.
