P.K. Subban to hold charity basketball game with Snoop Dogg
By Jason Parker
Montreal Canadiens star P.K. Subban will trade his skates for basketball shoes to host a charity game with legendary rapper Snoop Dogg.
For the past six seasons, P.K. Subban has been one of the top players in the NHL while being loved by fans of the Montreal Canadiens and loathed by fans of the other 29 teams in professional hockey. This summer, Subban is hanging up his skates and hitting the basketball court…for one night.
Subban will host a charity basketball game this June 11 in Montreal in which he will be the captain of a team of 12 players from the world of entertainment, music and sports. The captain of the other team? None other than legendary rapper Snoop Dogg.
According to the Montreal Gazette, the idea came about while the Doggfather was in Canada for this year’s NBA All-Star Game when the rapper was approached by his friend and the executive producer of Just for Laughs, Jacques Leonard:
"“I was with Snoop at a party and was telling him about our Grand Prix in June and how I wanted to do a big event on that weekend. Snoop suggested a charity basketball game and said I should get Subban involved. I told him it was a great idea, even though I didn’t know Subban back then.”"
P.K. Subban and Snoop Dogg met during the Canadiens’ swing through California during the 2015-16 NHL season, where the rapper received a team jersey from the star and both played basketball at Snoop Dogg’s home.
The event, which will be held during the same weekend as the Formula 1 race taking place in Montreal, will raise money for the charities of both stars. Leonard promises that Subban has some game:
"“Subban got really excited, particularly because he was already a big Snoop fan,” Léonard says. “It will be a fun and funny event, but it will also be good basketball. He (Subban) really is quite a good player. He played a lot of basketball growing up.”"
Montreal officials hope that the NBA will take note of the city’s love of basketball and consider it as a possible site for a franchise in the future.
