170. Juan Hernangomez is a 6-9 power forward who can also ease into the small forward role when needed. He’s been playing in the ACB in Spain — one of the best leagues in the world — and he’s already a productive player as a 20-year old. While the physical tools are there Hernangomez isn’t likely to come over this season, so this pick is to secure a future asset in Charlotte.
This offseason will be interesting for the Hornets as Al Jefferson, Nicolas Batum, Marvin Williams and Courtney Lee are all free agents. The team had a successful season including a postseason bid and once they get Michael Kidd-Gilchrist back the sky is the limit, but they have to bring back some of their free agents first. Hernangomez projects as a bit of a tweener in the NBA but he’s played center for his team in Spain so he’s versed in the post and he is also a solid pick-and-pop option. His decision making with the ball in his hands needs some work as he’s flustered by heavy pressure, sometimes leading to errant passes.

If the franchise is looking for an immediate impact type of the player, then Hernangomez probably isn’t the right guy, but he’s got lottery-level talent and a team can someone like him this late in the first round then it could be worth the wait.

To read more about Juan Hernangomez, <a href=.
