2: He has nothing left to prove

Let’s face it; if Tim Duncan were to come back for another season, what would he have left to prove? Would he come in with the goal of erasing this series from people’s minds, or would he be motivated to try to win his sixth ring?

If it’s the latter, he’d better be prepared to accept being a role player. As stated earlier, Aldridge has firmly taken the power forward spot from Duncan, and it’s more worthwhile to start Boris Diaw rather than play Duncan out of position at center. If that’s not something he’s interested in, then he should retire.

There’s a chance that he’s willing to sacrifice his playing time for the good of the team and go for another championship, but with five rings to his name already, he really has nothing left to prove. If there’s anyone more synonymous with the Spurs’ success than Gregg Popovich, it’s Tim Duncan, who turned the team’s fortunes around the moment he was drafted.

His tireless contributions to the team in addition to his individual milestones and championships won should cement his status as the greatest power forward of all-time. Most people recognize that already, and don’t need Duncan to attempt to rectify his mistakes this season.

Duncan’s interests really should be to preserve his long-term health and to keep his legacy intact. And the best way to accomplish both is to ride off into the sunset.
