Rockets fans held rally for Kenny Smith to be next head coach

Houston Rockets fans gathered for a rally on Friday in support of Kenny Smith being the team’s next head coach

One of the most interesting things about this offseason in the NBA isn’t the big names that could be available in free agency, but is instead the fact that there are several high-profile teams that have been or are in search of a head coach, including the Houston Rockets. Making matters even more interesting, though, is the number of big names available to fill coaching vacancies. That last part is what makes the latest chatter and events around the Rockets so curious.

Over the past week, there has been a buzz about the Rockets potentially hiring former Houston guard and current Inside the NBA personality, Kenny Smith, the be the next head coach of the team. Smith obviously has no head coaching experience—or coaching experience at all for that matter—despite his basketball pedigree.

Perhaps the most curious part of this, though, is the fact that Rockets fans are in full support of this. In fact, fans gathered on Friday to hold a rally outside of the Toyota Center in support of Houston hiring Smith to be the next head coach:

This is truly baffling no matter how you slice it. That’s not meant as any disrespect to Smith, but rather as just a question of what the thought-process of these fans is beyond “we know who Kenny Smith is.”

We shall see if this buzz or movement continues to garner momentum in the coming days and weeks. However, it’s progressing further than anyone could’ve expected when the Rockets’ coaching search began.
