David Ortiz takes second base as souvenir after 600th double (Video)

David Ortiz took second base as a souvenir after hitting his 600th career double.

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has done a lot of special things in his career that put him in elite company. He joined another elite group on May 14 after hitting his 600th double. It was, of course, a walk-off double. Ortiz appreciated the honor of joining Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds as the only players ever with 500 home runs and 600 doubles. He celebrated by taking second base with him.

Ortiz is retiring at the end of this season, but he is definitely retiring on a good note. He’s off to a great start, which is impressive considering that Ortiz has usually not been a strong starter for most of his career. Ortiz could become the first designated hitter to be enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame if Edgar Martinez doesn’t get in before him.

The accomplishment of getting 500 home runs and 600 doubles solidifies his Hall of Fame case. Only two other players have done that. The first is one of the greatest players to play the game (Aaron) while the second one is the best player ever who isn’t in the Hall of Fame (Bonds).
