The Seattle Seahawks quarterback touched on life, overcoming obstacles and his famous interception in Saturday’s commencement address.

Russell Wilson knows a thing or two about overcoming adversity.

He’s overcome constant scrutiny of his height (5-foot-11) to become one of just 20 quarterbacks in NFL history to appear in at least two Super Bowls.

As it turns out, Wilson things a thing or two about self-deprecating humor, too, and isn’t above poking some fun at how his last Super Bowl appearance ended.

Wilson, speaking for roughly 18 minutes Saturday at the University of Wisconsin’s commencement ceremony, shared some of his life personal life lessons with the graduating class.

“Of course, I’m also here to share some things I’ve learned,” Wilson said. “Things like, if you’re dating a woman that’s way out of your league, ask her to marry you (singer Ciara). If you can throw a football 80 yards, for some reason, people think that’s pretty cool.

“And if you’re playing the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, and you’ve got 26 seconds left and you’re down by four, and it’s second and goal on their 1-yard line, try not to throw an interception. That’s purely, purely hypothetical though, of course.”

Wilson’s speech begins at the 1:07:00 mark in the video below.

Wilson played just one season at Wisconsin, but it was a banner year. Wilson guided the Badgers to an 11-3 record and appearance in the 2012 Rose Bowl, where they lost 45-38 to Oregon. Wilson had previously played three years at North Carolina State before transferring in his final year of eligibility.

Wilson was drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft by the Seattle Seahawks, and has since been selected to three Pro Bowls.
