5. Fan’s lucky fishing lure, Milwaukee Bucks

Just about every team has held a fan promotion for NBA Draft lucky charms at some point in their franchise history. However, few have been as famous or successful as as the Bucks’ contest in 2005.

The Bucks needed something to spark a little bit of hope in 2005, as they mustered just a 30-win season and had only been past the first round of the postseason once over a span of 15 years. With the sixth-worst record in the NBA that season, Milwaukee ran a massive fan contest to come up with the best good luck charm.

Milwaukee eventually settled on a lucky fishing lure from fan Michael Millies, beating out other charms like bracelets, posters, and even a pet Pug. A gift from his grandfather nicnkmaned “Little Cleo”, Millies said the lure always helped him catch much bigger fish than other charms.

Sure enough, the Bucks won the top pick with just a 6.3 percent chance to do so, using the selection on center Andrew Bogut. For his effort, Millies was rewarded with four tickets to the Bucks’ home opener that season.

Bogut was solid for the Bucks even while dealing with numerous injuries, but the team was unable to break through in the postseason. Still, Millies’ charm gave the franchise a spark by beating the Lottery odds.
