5 teams that can use Zach Mettenberger
By Randy Gurzi
1. New York Jets
The New York Jets have played a high stakes game of chicken with their former starter, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to end any time soon. Thanks to Fitzpatrick’s demands, the Jets are now looking at quarterback a group that features Geno Smith, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty.
All three are young, and Hackenberg was a second round pick this season with tremendous upside. His issue was inconsistent play and at times it seemed like he was quick to defer the blame. Petty is raw and worked in a spread offense in college and scouts for the team say he still has a ways to go.
Smith is just bad. He has been given chance after chance by New York and falls on his face every time. For some reason he still has a roster spot and bringing in someone like Mettenberger could finally be enough for the team to pass on the failed draft pick from a few seasons ago.
The Jets took Hackenberg early enough that they believe in him as a starter, and he can probably be that, but he needs time. Mettenberger gives the Jets some time to develop Hackenberg the right way, while not having to rely on the turnover machine in Smith to start until Hack is ready.
Obviously the best scenario for Jets fans and the team would be to get Fitzpatrick and his 31 touchdowns from a season ago under contract. Unfortunately, no ground has been made on that front, meaning a move for Mettenberger could be the band-aid they need for one season.
