DraftKings MLB Picks For May 16

There are eight games tonight, so that means a lot of stats to go through, and a lot of tough decisions to make. Who should you spend on? Let’s hit the stats!

More from DraftKings

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players.

Kenta Maeda has never faced the Angels, so none of them will be on here. Michael Pineda has never faced the Diamondbacks, as his mound opponent, Robbie Ray, has never faced the Yankees. Rookie Jose Berrios will get his first crack at division rivals Detroit as well. Sean Manaea is getting his first crack at the Rangers as well. John Lamb has never faced in-state rival Cleveland The same is true for mound opponent Cody Anderson. Many players could be worth using against these pitchers, there are just no stats to back it up.

Best Bets:

Jordan Zimmerman ($10,300): Zimmerman has a limited history against the Twins, but the Twins are only hitting .229 off of him in 35 at bats with a homer, three RBI and eight strikeouts. Zimmerman has been less dominant since the calendar hit May, but he is still good enough to use here.

Adam Conley ($8,200): Conley has held the Phillies to a .191 average in 47 at bats with just three RBI and eight strikeouts. Don’t be surprised if he ends up being the best option of the day, at a very reasonable price. He will be widely used, but you may need him.

Honorable Mention:

Drew Smyly ($11,100): Smyly got beat up by the Mariners in his last start, but he has a pretty good history against the Blue Jays, with one notable exception (more on that later). He has held the Jays to a .212 average in 85 at bats with 20 strikeouts, but they have already hit seven home runs off of him. The lack of baserunners has limited the damage, but that is why he is not an elite option tonight.

Jerad Eickhoff ($6,700): You always have to be careful with small sample sizes, but Eickhoff has looked good against the Marlins so far. They are only hitting .238 with no runs off of him in 21 at bats, but they have also only struck out four times. He could have a good game, but there is risk involved.

Dark Horses:

Derek Holland ($6,400): His ERA over 6 is going to scare a lot of suitors away today, but the A’s are only hitting .206 off of him in 97 at bats with 22 strikeouts, but they have driven in 12 runs. There is risk involved, but if you are the gambling type, this may pay off.

Williams Perez ($5,400): Perez hasn’t had much success in the majors, but he has had against the Pirates. They are only hitting .214 off of him in 28 at bats with one RBI and four strikeouts. There is a huge risk because his strikeout potential isn’t that high, but if you are willing to gamble, he coudl be the guy.

You have heard our FanDuel experts Matt Rogers and Brian Tulloch talk about “stacking” pieces of a lineup against certain pitchers. Here are the stacks that could work well on DraftKings today, based on past statistics.

Josh Donaldson ($4,300) is 7-14 with a walk, two doubles, three homers, and four RBI against Drew Smyly. Michael Saunders ($3,200) is also hitting Smyly well. He is 3-6 with a double, two homers, and three RBI off of him.

You may have a lot to gain by stacking Royals against Rick Porcello. Alex Gordon ($3,100) is 11-41(.268) with two walks, two doubles, two homers, and seven RBI off of Porcello. Eric Hosmer ($3,900) is 9-26(.346) with three walks, a double, two homers, and three RBI in his career off of Porcello. Lorenzo Cain ($3,800) is 5-13(.385) with a RBI against Porcello.

The Rays have actually fared well against J.A. Happ. Evan Longoria ($4,200) is 9-24(.375) with three walks, two doubles, a homer, and two driven in against Happ. Steven Souza ($3,700) is 4-9 with two doubles and a solo homer. Logan Morrison ($2,100) is 7-14 with a walk, three doubles, and four RBI. He could be a huge bargain. Steve Pearce ($3,100) is 8-24 with two walks, two doubles, three homers, and an impressive nine RBI off Happ.

Do you trust Billy Butler ($3,200)? Me either, but he is 5-17(.294) with two walks, a homer, and three RBI off of Holland. Both Coco Crisp and Jed Lowrie are below the Mendoza line against Holland, but they each have a homer and four RBI.

Freddie Freeman ($3,800) has been the only bright spot for the Braves, and the only Brave to do much of anything against Jon Niese. Freeman is only 11-49(.224) off of Niese, but he has two doubles, two homers, and seven RBI.
