11. Stephon Marbury, Ray Allen Trade (1996)

Normally when you think about shocking trades that occurred in the NBA Lottery, a big reason as to why they qualify as “shocking” is because of the fact that they were incredibly lopsided either at the time or in retrospect. However, one of the craziest trades that has ever happened on draft night in the NBA actually involved two highly talented players being swapped unexpectedly to appease certain players.

In the 1996 NBA Draft, Allen Iverson was the obvious No. 1 overall pick and everyone behind made sense. Two of the top-five picks, though, were clearly Stephon Marbury out of Georgia Tech and Ray Allen out of UConn. As such, the Milwaukee Bucks took Marbury at No. 4 overall and Allen went to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

However, Marbury was desired by Timberwolves rising star Kevin Garnett as the two were longtime friends who wanted to play with one another. Therefore, the Wolves front office was willing to appease Garnett and traded Allen and a future first-round pick to the Bucks in exchange for Marbury.

Allen had the better overall career looking back, but it was such a huge trade at the time considering that both teams got a big-time prospect. That’s enough to make a shocking moment, without question.
