24. Nets Win No. 1 Overall Pick (2000)

When you look back at draft classes, there are some that stand out for being monumentally great (2003, anybody) and there are those that are memorable because of just how bad they were. At the head of the pack in regards to the latter scenario is, without question, the 2000 NBA Draft that is almost unanimously considered the worst NBA Lottery and the draft class in history.

The lottery picks in the 2000 draft considered a number of players who are flooring to be seen taken that high in the draft. Stromile Swift went No. 2 overall, Darius Miles at No. 3, and Marcus Fizer at No. 4. Even worse is that it’s as bad or even worse at points throughout the most of the lottery. However, the then New Jersey Nets came up with a bit of fortune in the NBA Lottery.

Despite only finishing the previous season with the seventh worst record in the entire league, the Nets were able to win the lottery and get the No. 1 overall pick—even with only 44 out of 1,000 chances at getting that selection. They were then able to get Kenyon Martin, who became the only player in that lottery to make an All-Star Game. Not a bad turn of fortune!
