The two clubs almost didn’t make it there, as they both nearly lost commanding first-leg deficits. Sheffield last Wednesday were able to grab a 3-1 aggregate win against Brighton & Hove Albion, but they forced a 1-1 draw on Monday May 16th.
As for Hull, they had a 3-0 advantage over their opponent, Derby County, and almost saw that lead disappear, as they lost their second-leg match 2-0. However, that one more goal they scored in the first match was just enough to see them through to the playoff final.
The prize of winning this match is much more than just gaining promotion to the EPL. The winner will see promotion and a payout of £170 million. That is a lot of money to help a team get back into the top flight of English football.
The two teams played each other twice this year, both ended in low scoring draws.
For Hull, this could be their ticket back into the EPL, after they were relegated a season ago. They have been playing some good football this season, and they could find themselves back in the EPL after just one season removed. They finished the season 24-11-11, good enough for fourth in the league. This will also be their third match at Wembley in the last two years.
As for Sheffield Wednesday, they are seen as underdogs. They finished in the last playoff spot, sixth, and had a 19-17-10 record. Although, they did play an exceptional first-leg match against the first playoff seeded Albion and kept them to a 1-1 draw in the final-leg. The club hasn’t seen top flight football since 2000 and were one of the inaugural Premier League clubs back in 1992.
This should be an entertaining match, as most playoff championship finals are. This is the chance for a club like Sheffield Wednesday to see EPL football for the first time in over a decade, and the chance for Hull to go back to the top flight and show they can keep up with the big clubs.
