Canelo Alvarez did something no one wanted him to do on Wednesday, dropping the WBC middleweight title
Ever since Canelo Alvarez dropped Amir Khan like a ton of bricks in the sixth round, everyone has been waiting for an answer as to whether or not he will step into the ring with the man that holds a plethora of other middleweight belts, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Well, we got some sort of an answer on Wednesday, but not the one everyone wanted.
Under the pressure of the negotiations to get something with GGG in place, Alvarez announced on Wednesday that he will be dropping his WBC middleweight belt, With this taking place, obviously, GGG will be awarded the WBC middleweight championship.

Now, of course, this doesn’t mean that a fight between the two is completely out of the cards, but the pressure isn’t there anymore to unify the belts. Canelo had 15 days from the time that he knocked out Khan to figure out what he wanted to do, and in his eyes, this was the most plausible outcome out of all this.
In a statement, Alvarez did say that he will continue negotiations with Golovkin’s camp — but people shouldn’t get their hopes up too high. At the very least, if there was anyone that had hoped we’d see the fight this fall, those hopes are completely out the window now.
