What is the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race format?

ByJason Parker|

Here is a look at the format for this year’s NASCAR Spring All-Star Race, taking place this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

This weekend, dozens of the top drivers in NASCAR will be on the track at the famed Charlotte Motor Speedway for the annual Sprint All-Star Race. It will be the 32nd event held and the 30th straight one that will take place in the Tar Heel State (also the site of the inaugural race in 1985).

Last season, the event consisted of four 25 lap segments that was followed by a 10 lap final segment. In 2016, there will be a new format after input from some of the top drivers in the circuit, according to NASCAR.com:

"There are three segments in this year’s Sprint All-Star Race — a 50-lap opening segment, a 50-lap second segment and a 13-lap final dash to the finish with a unique rule. For the first time in the event’s history, the starting order for the final segment will be determined following a random draw that decides if the top running nine, 10 or 11 cars have to pit for a mandatory four-tire stop between Segment 2 and Segment 3."

Brad Keselowski, who will be participating in the event as a former NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, thinks the changes will be ones that will make for a better race for fans:

"“I just wanted to see the race something that I would want to watch if I was a fan, and something that I would want to be proud of if I was the driver that won it. Quite honestly, I didn’t feel like the formats of the past few years were that way.”"

The 32nd NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race will take place Saturday, May 21 at 7pm and will be televised live on FOX Sports 1.
