NBA Draft 2016: 5 options for Boston Celtics at No. 3
Kris Dunn, Point Guard, Providence
Early in the NBA Draft it is always best to take the best player who you think is left on the board and not worry about positional needs. Probably the last thing that the Celtics need is a defensive-first guard, but after Simmons and Ingram, Dunn is the best player in this draft class.
Standing 6-foot-4 with a 6-foot-9 wingspan, great quickness and ridiculous leaping ability, it is easy to see to fall in love with Dunn’s game. He is an elite athletic who is a fantastic player with the ball in his hands. Dunn will take control of the offense, and consistently find the best option on the floor to score. He can set up his teammates well while also being able to create his own shot.
Dunn has a tendency to turn the ball over too much and his outside shooting is streaky, but he is an incredible offensive weapon with a lot of upside with the ball in his hands at the NBA level.
On top of that, Dunn is an absolute lock-down defender. His length, quickness, power and raw athleticism give opposing guards fits on the perimeter. He is a high-level defender who will be able to defend the best players in the NBA.
Selecting Dunn would create a glut of players at the guard position for the Celtics. It would likely open up a trade for someone like Marcus Smart or Avery Bradley, but that does not matter. Dunn is an established player whose skills are undoubtedly going to translate to the NBA.
The Celtics would be wise to take a hard look at these guys, but in the end, Dunn should be the pick.
