After the 2002-2003 season, the Portland Trail Blazers were a team in transition from the team that had been making plenty of deep playoff runs. They would have some young pieces on the roster like Zach Randolph, but the Trail Blazers needed to acquire more.

In the 2003 NBA Draft, the Trail Blazers made a solid pick in Travis Outlaw, but it’s highly likely that he might have gone before Portland would have picked if there was a re-draft, because of the talent and potential he had.

That means in this re-draft, the Trail Blazers would take a player that was a pure shooter but a good in James Jones. Jones would spend most of his career as a player that was constantly on a contender and used as a key shooter off the bench.

The Trail Blazers were 10th in offensive rating that season, but adding another shooter like Jones could have helped them greatly as well. Who knows, maybe Jones’ trajectory takes off more in Portland than it did elsewhere and he gets his chance to prove himself as a starter?

It wouldn’t have been a bad pick to make and there have certainly been worse picks made near the bottom of the first round.
