5 reasons Frank Vogel can lead Orlando Magic to NBA Playoffs
By John Buhler
Frank Vogel will take over for Scott Skiles as the next head coach of the Orlando Magic. Here are five reasons Vogel makes the Magic a playoff contender.
Besides maybe the Minnesota Timberwolves hiring former Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau very early this offseason, the Orlando Magic’s decision to hire former Indiana Pacers head coach Frank Vogel might be the best head coaching hire in the NBA this spring.
Vogel was not given a contract extension by Pacers team president Larry Bird after failing to win Game 7 on the road against the No. 2 seeded Toronto Raptors in the Pacers’ first round playoff series.
Indiana ushered in the small ball era in Indianapolis and in what could have been a rebuilding year for the Pacers, Vogel’s club fought admirably to a No. 7 seed in the 2016 Eastern Conference Playoffs, forcing a Game 7 against a superior Raptors team.
With Vogel leaving the Hoosier State for the Sunshine State for his next NBA head coaching gig, he will have his work cut out for him turning around this mediocre Magic team. Orlando has yet to get back to the Eastern Conference Playoffs since former face of the franchise in All-Star center Dwight Howard left the team for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2012 NBA free agency.
While it may not ultimately happen in year one in Central Florida, here are five strong reasons that Vogel is the perfect head coach for the Magic to turn them into a viable Eastern Conference Playoffs contender, possibly as early as next spring.
