DraftKings Late MLB Picks For May 19

There are nine games in the night tournament, which still leaves us plenty of options. Who should you spend on? Let’s hit the stats!

More from DraftKings

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players.

Tim Adelman is making his first appearance against In-state rival Cleveland. Ross Stripling is making his first start against the crosstown Angels. Jon Gray has also never faced the Cardinals. He has pitched well lately, but can he do it against that offense? Mike Foltynewicz has never faced the Pirates. He has only given up six runs in three starts. Can you trust that against the Pirates?

Best Bets:

Chris Sale ($13,800): Sale is expensive, but he may be worth it. He has struck out 11 Astros in 38 at bats while only allowing a .237 average and two runs. That may not be quite the dominant stats that you want from someone this expensive, but this is a team that strikes out a lot. That will easily make up for any hits he allows.

Matt Harvey ($9,700): Harvey has struggled this year, but his career stats against the Nationals provide some hope. He has held the Nats to a .208 average in 144 at bats with a homer, only eight RBI, and an impressive 48 strikeouts. He is a risk because of how the season has gone so far, but history is on his side.

Honorable Mention:

James Shields ($8,200): Shields has very good numbers against the Giants in his career. They are hitting just .212 off of Shields in 156 at bats with no homers and ten RBI, but also have only struck out 28 times. The strikeout potential keeps Shields in this tier, but don’t be surprised if he is among the top three pitchers of the day at a much lower price.

Marco Estrada ($8,100): Throwing anyone out there against the Twins has been a good idea lately. Estrada also has the stats to back it up. He boasts a 2.89 ERA on the season, and has held the Twins to a .226 average in 62 at bats in his career with a homer and six driven in. He has only struck out 12, but as long as he limits runs and base runners, he holds enough value to use.

Dark Horses:

Collin McHugh ($6,900): There is a lot going against McHugh here. First of all, he is facing off against Chris Sale. He has an ERA in the mid-5’s, and plays for a team that is currently not scoring a lot of runs. So why use him? He has done pretty well against the White Sox. They are hitting .234 off of him in 47 at bats with one homer, seven RBI, and a high 14 strikeouts. When you add to that that a the homer and three of the RBI came from Matt Davidson, a guy who isn’t in the majors right now, and the stats become even more impressive. McHugh could be a nice sleeper tonight.

Jeff Locke ($6,200): The Braves are God’s gift to pitchers right now. Locke has struggled this year, but he has dominated the current Braves roster. They are only hitting .161 off of him in 31 at bats. The bad news is they have as many RBI as strikeouts (four). Still, he could come up big tonight.

You have heard our FanDuel experts Matt Rogers and Brian Tulloch talk about “stacking” pieces of a lineup against certain pitchers. Here are the stacks that could work well on DraftKings today, based on past statistics.

Stacking Blue Jays against Ervin Santana could win you some money. Jose Bautista ($4,600) is 8-29(.276) with eight walks, three doubles, two homers, and four RBI in his career against Ervin. Josh Donaldson ($4,800) is 5-14(.357) with a walk, two doubles, two homers, and four driven in. Justin Smoak ($3,300) is 7-24(.292) with five walks, two doubles, a homer, and five driven in. Ryan Goins, Michael Saunders, and Edwin Encarnacion have also knocked Santana out of the park. Use as many as you can afford!

The Dodgers are very familiar with Jhoulys Chacin from his time with the Rockies. That is not good for Chacin. The Dodgers are hitting .387 off of him. There is a lot to stack here. Carl Crawford ($3,000) is 6-9 with two doubles and two RBI. A.J. Ellis ($2,500) is worth using if he gets the start. Ellis is 7-17(.412) with a walk, a double, a homer, and three RBI off Chacin. Adrian Gonzalez ($3,800) is 7-21 with two walks, a homer, and four RBI. He is worth using if he can play.

Jose Altuve is still expensive at $4,800, but he is 5-14(.357) with a double and a RBI against Chris Sale. That said, there are likely more reliable places to spend your money.

Nolan Arenado ($4,400) is 2-6 with a homer and two RBI against Michael Wacha.

Neil Walker ($2,900) is 3-11(.273) with a walk, a homer, and two RBI off of Stephen Strasburg. He is about the only Met that has managed to hit Strasburg very well aside from Travis d’Arnaud, so he is worth considering tonight.

Matt Kemp ($3,900) is 2-7 with a double, a homer, and two RBI off of Jeff Samardzija. By the way, Samardzija had his worst start of the season against this same San Diego team two weeks ago. Some food for thought.

Brian McCann ($3,700) is already 3-5 with a walk, a homer, and two RBI against Kendall Graveman.

Gregor Blanco ($3,000) likes James Shields. Blanco is 5-12(.417) with two walks, a triple, and four RBI against Samardzija. Joe Panik ($3,600) is 5-13(.385) with three walks, two doubles, and a RBI. It isn’t all bad for the Giants off of Shields.

Joe Mauer ($3,200) is 3-12 with two doubles and three RBI against Marco Estrada. Oswaldo Arcia ($3,400) is 1-3 with a two run homer. However, using any Twins player right now is a risk.

If it weren’t for Freddie Freeman ($3,700), the Braves would be even more dreadful against Jeff Locke. Freeman is 2-7 with four walks, a double, and three RBI against Locke.
