Roger Federer has withdrawn from the 2016 French Open due to an injury

Anytime that Roger Federer enters a tournament, especially one of the four Grand Slams, he’s one of the favorites to win it. Even as he starts to head into the latter part of his prime or even his career, Federer is still one of the all-time greats and can never be counted out. That would’ve been the case at the 2016 French Open, but that was until Thursday when he announced he has to withdraw from the tournament.

The 34-year-old Federer posted on his official Facebook on Thursday afternoon that he doesn’t feel it would be beneficial for him to play the French Open at less than 100 percent and he’s not at that point just yet:

Federer first injured his back earlier in May while practicing for the Madrid Open and he was forced to pull out of that tournament. He played in the next tournament, but didn’t look like himself in the slightest as he was ousted in the third round.

While you have to respect a veteran player of his caliber owning up to the fact that he’s not going to be at his best, it’s unfortunate to take a big name like Roger Federer out of the French Open. Sure, there are still going to be some of the best in the world competing, but that field just doesn’t feel complete without Federer in the mix.
