9. Willson Contreras, Chicago Cubs

Willson Contreras’s path to the majors is somewhat clouded by the fact he is owned by the current best team in baseball, the Chicago Cubs. When a team is carrying a winning percentage in the range of .750, there is not much need for help from the minor league ranks.

However, the Cubs might consider calling up Contreras anyway. The 24-year-old catcher would be a welcome addition offensively, where current catchers Miguel Montero and David Ross have struggled. Much like Kyle Schwarber a year ago, Contreras could offer a jolt of life at the plate as soon as he joins the club. He is currently carrying a .339/.436/.509 split line for the Iowa Cubs, after hitting .283 in the Arizona Fall League and .333 over the full season at Double-A Tennessee in 2015.

The bigger question is just where can the Cubs fit him into their roster, and if they see the need to. They are getting plenty of production from other positions, and seem fine to lean on the catcher slot for defensive purposes only. Contreras does have some work to do in becoming a stronger game-caller, but eventually his bat will breakthrough and he will get his shot to add to the Cubs onslaught.
