16. Mark Appel, Philadelphia Phillies

Mark Appel, the former No. 1 overall pick of the Astros, landed in Philadelphia as part of the trade that saw Ken Giles head to to Houston. Thus far, Appel has adapted well to his new surroundings outside of the offense-heavy Texas League, lowering his ERA by nearly a run and keeping the ball in the park at a much better rate.

Appel’s career has not followed the trajectory that is expected of a No. 1 pick, and he has taken longer to round into shape than the Phillies would like. Appel has actually gotten better as he has risen through the minors, and will likely get a chance to continue that trend at the major league level by mid-summer.

The Phillies’ rotation will likely need to call upon him to help manage innings and even be a production boost in their starting offering. If he can improve on his control and continue to avoid the long ball that has plagued him throughout his early pro career, Appel should quickly establish himself as a solid backend rotation option for the young Phillies this year.
