5. Jameson Taillon, Pittsburgh Pirates

If Pittsburgh don’t call up Glasnow soon, it could very well be because they turn to his rotation mate, Jameson Taillon, first. The past few years have been tough for the talented, injury-plagued Taillon, who was the second overall pick in the 2010 draft. He is back on the mound this season for the first time since 2013 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2014 and receiving treatment for a hernia complication in 2015.

However, healthy at last, he has picked up right where he left off prior to the injuries. Behind a plus-curveball and strong control with his fastball, Taillon is able to create strikeouts in a number of ways. He put this talent on display during his last outing, when he struck out 11 batters in only six innings, while allowing only one walk. On the year, he has totaled 43 strikeouts against only five walks, while sporting a 2-2 record and a 2.08 ERA.

The only thing he has to prove at this point is that his body will hold up over the course of repeated outings. The Pirates would be right to move cautiously with Taillon, but like Glasnow, the temptation of seeing him impact the NL Central pennant race could be too great to ignore.
