Larry Bird thinks we’re witnessing the greatest era in NBA history.
Throughout the 2015-2016 NBA season, there were multiple voices of the past who chimed in during the Golden State Warriors pursuit of breaking the Chicago Bulls wins record.
It seemed the majority of players from past generations were slow to acknowledge the Warriors as the greatest team in NBA history and at least, pay respect to the new generation.
If you didn’t think the Warriors are the greatest gift to the NBA, you were classified as an angry old man.
Well, Larry Bird doesn’t want the internet mob to come after him because the Boston Celtics Hall of Fame forward and president of the Indiana Pacers tells the New Yorker that this generation could be the best era in NBA history because of the Warriors and players like Steph Curry and his unlimited range.
"“It’s funny how the game has changed,” Bird continued. “And my thinking about it. I was really worried–back sixteen, seventeen years ago–that the little guy didn’t have a spot in the N.B.A. anymore: it was just going to be the big guards like Magic Johnson. But then players started shooting more threes and spacing the court, and everyone wants small guards now. Watching these kids play now, I’m like everybody else: Wow, man. They can really shoot! They have more freedom to get to the basket. The ball moves a little better. These kids are shooting from farther, with more accuracy. Now some teams shoot up around thirty threes a game. My era, you always think that’s the greatest era. But I’m not so sure anymore.”"
Time will tell is this generation delivers the greatest era in NBA history but with the emphasis on the three-point shot and players having the ability to connect from 25 feet, it’ll be interesting to see the evolution of the game over the next 5-10 years.
