Though anything can happen in the WWE, it may still be a little too early for the Demon to make his way up to the WWE roster at Extreme Rules.
When it comes to Finn Balor, it appears to be a question of when and not if he’ll be a member of the main WWE roster before the summer ends. The arrival of his Bullet Club … oops, sorry, The Club … buddies Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson ratcheted up the anticipation to overdrive.
A killer stable could certainly be made with Balor, Gallows, Anderson and AJ Styles (even though Balor and Styles were never in the Bullet Club at the same time in New Japan Pro Wrestling), and at first glance, tonight’s Extreme Rules seems like the perfect time for the Demon to make his permanent WWE debut.
For starters, Balor no longer has the NXT Championship, dropping it to Samoa Joe a month ago in a non-televised match after holding it for nearly a year. Certainly, he could have made the jump and lost the strap afterwards, as Kevin Owens did, but a move is much easier without a title to worry about.
It’s also the perfect pay-per-view for a run-in considering anything goes in the Extreme Rules main event between Styles and Roman Reigns. With The Club already occupied with their own match against The Usos, it could be a great opportunity for the WWE to insert Balor into the mix, lending a hand to Styles — and could even be used as a slight swerve if Styles is upset about the assistance, leading to a feud between AJ and Finn.
Working against this idea is the fact that Balor already is slated for a rematch against Samoa Joe in a Steel Cage match at NXT TakeOver in early June. Again, while there’s no reason that he couldn’t take that title shot even after showing up on the main WWE roster, it’s also a lot more logical for him to show up after losing to Joe again, which would make a fitting final chapter to his time in NXT.
It would be a surprise if we’re still having this conversation about Finn Balor a few months from now leading up to SummerSlam, because he should be showing up sooner rather than later. But Extreme Rules might be a little too soon, all things considered.
