MLB Trade Deadline: 1 trade every team shouldn’t make
Colorado Rockies: Selling low on Charlie Blackmon
The Rockies finally kicked off a rebuild with the Troy Tulowitzki trade last deadline, and more should be on the way this summer.
Colorado is off to a solid 20-18 start and there have been plenty of encouraging signs like Trevor Story and Tyler Chatwood, but they likely don’t have enough to compete with the top two in the NL West over the long-term. There are a few pieces who could be dealt, including Carlos Gonzalez and Jake McGee , if both can get things turned around.
Besides avoiding another head-scratcher like the Corey Dickerson for McGee trade, the Rockies should hang on to one veteran piece. The Rockies missed there initial window to trade Blackmon, and should now try to wait for another one to open.
Blackmon has had some very valuable stretches in Colorado, particularly at the beginning of 2014, when his value was at its highest. However, he’s slowed down to a 92 wRC+ mark at the plate this year per FanGraphs, and a concerning foot injury has hurt his base stealing ability, which was one of his greatest tools over the past two seasons.
As Blackmon will enter his first arbitration season next year, the Rockies could still get a good return later on. Colorado should wait an see if Blackmon can prove himself fully healthy and rebuild some value at the plate.
