Milwaukee Brewers: Dealing Wily Peralta

Like the division rival Reds, the Brewers are doing a complete tear down of the organization, and should be trading whatever veterans they can at the deadline.

Milwaukee has quietly done an excellent job in its rebuilding process so far, including getting excellent returns for Carlos Gomez and Jean Segura. The Brewers are currently 17-23 and don’t have much of a shot in the brutal NL Central, but there have been good signs from a few young players like Domingo Santana.

New general manager David Stearns still has some to work with at the deadline, and has to be thrilled with good starts from Jonathan Lucroy and Ryan Braun. If the Brewers are to hang on to any veterans, Peralta should be the one they are more hesitant to deal.

Peralta was the de-facto ace of the Brewers rotation after solid seasons in 2013 and 2014, but had a rough year last year. Things have gotten even worse to start 2016, as Peralta’s ERA stands north of seven.

That erases whatever trade value Peralta might have had, so the Brewers should give him a shot to turn things around in a lost season, even if that means a minors stint or being sent to the bullpen. Peralta will enter arbitration next year, so the Brewers can still use him as a trade chip later on if he turns things around, or keep him in the rotation as the team improves.
