San Diego Padres: Selling Wil Myers

Most of A.J. Preller’s moves from a wild first offseason backfired, and the Padres are now paying for it with a 17-24 start. San Diego’s extensive rebuild kicked off with a nice return for Craig Kimbrel in the offseason, and will continue at the 2016 trade deadline.

Unlike a few other sellers, the Padres will have quite a few pieces to auction off. Shields, Cashner, and Tyson Ross (if healthy) will probably be gone, while San Diego is desperately hoping someone will be willing to take Matt Kemp.

There aren’t too many non-prospects the Padres should hang onto after losing so much of their farm system. If San Diego is going to retain any one player, it should be Myers.

Myers had a top prospect pedigree coming up through the Royals system and won Rookie of the Year as a member of the Rays in 2013 before heading to San Diego last year. While Myers has never put up the superstar numbers many have envisioned, he’s healthy and playing a little better this year with 0.9 WAR through 39 games per FanGraphs.

At the beginning of a very long rebound, Myers should be the piece the Padres center at least something around, even if they are tempted to completely blow everything up.
