NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made a strong statement about North Carolina’s controversial restroom law.
Ever since the creation of the controversial North Carolina House Bill 2, plenty of organizations, celebrities, communities and individuals have come together to take a stand against the restroom law aimed against the transgender community.
While some organizations have been more firm in stance than others, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell finally made a strong statement against the law on Tuesday. According to ProFootballTalk, Goodell made it clear at an NFL owners meeting.
"“Anything that discriminates, we oppose,” Goodell said when asked about North Carolina’s House Bill 2. “We will continue to fight that. We have a franchise here. The Carolina Panthers play here, they operate here, and we want to work with the community. We’re not going to threaten a community.“We’re going to work with the community to make the effective changes necessary long term.”"
It’s a necessary statement from a league that has a vesting business interest in the state in the Carolina Panthers. With the Panthers being the defending NFC Champions and having the MVP as their quarterback, it’s a great chance for the league to strike and make their stand behind one of the most popular teams in the league.
Whether or not they threaten to take away any events they might have their like the NBA and their 2017 NBA All-Star Game remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the league values inclusiveness just as much as any other league and want to make sure that the state understands where they are the discussion as well.
How the league proceeds forward with their statements will be interesting, but it’s clear that they’re on the side of resolution and equal rights.
