Sorry MLS fans, but it doesn’t look like Cristiano Ronaldo will ever be lacing up his boots for a U.S. side.
Don’t expect Cristiano Ronaldo to make his way to America, or anywhere else, after Father Time finally starts robbing him of some of his ridiculous talent.
Despite rumors to the contrary, Ronaldo apparently won’t be seeking a move away from Real Madrid for the remainder of his career. The global superstar told La Marca (as relayed by Sports Illustated) that he didn’t see himself anywhere else during his playing days.
“I have had good and bad moments, four years ago I was not happy but there is no better place to be than here,” Ronaldo said.
He also specifically named Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City — two clubs that have the massive amounts of cash necessary to even think about securing his services — that they “can forget it” since he plans to retire with his current team.
There’s always been speculation that Ronaldo would consider taking the route paved by David Beckham and an increasing number of aging stars from European clubs and make the jump to the MLS once his play began to slip just a tad. Now that seems a more distant possibility than ever.
SI also mentioned that Ronaldo isn’t likely to step away from football any time soon, pointing out his desire to play in two more World Cups for Portugal. He’d be 37 when the 2022 World Cup rolls around, and since his current contract with Real Madrid expires prior to that, he’d have to sign one more deal to reach his stated goals.
