Amid tons of controversy, Baylor has fired head football coach Art Briles.

Despite helping bring the football program out of the ashes, Baylor University fired head football coach Art Briles on Thursday amid controversy surrounding sexual assault cases around the university.

Multiple sexual assault cases have been surrounding the Baylor football program in recent weeks, and certain whispers suggest that Briles knew about them and still allow his players to play. While this hasn’t been proved, Baylor firing Briles suggests that he was at least partially responsible for the attempted cover-up of the situation.

A strong recruiter who brought his fast-paced offensive attack to Baylor, Briles went 65-37 through his eight years as the head coach of the program. He led a football team stuck in neutral to national prominence. However, if he put the women at the University in harm’s way by hiding information about his players, then obviously the firing is warranted.

It will be interesting to see in which direction Baylor heads after moving on from Briles. Who will replace him, and will they be able to have the same kind of success? Perhaps more importantly, will the football program be facing any repercussions from this mess?

Art Briles was a success on the field at Baylor, but this is a kind of situation it tough to come back from no matter how may Robert Griffin like players you produce.
