11. Kim Clijsters

Clijsters won over 80 percent of her career singles matches and ascended to the top of the women’s rankings in 2003, topping the likes of Davenport, the Williams’ sisters and Justine Henin. Injuries and close calls kept Clijsters from ever winning the French open.

Other than a US Open title in 2005, most of Clijsters’ Grand Slam success came following a brief retirement in 2007 and 2008. Clijsters became the first woman in nearly a decade to win consecutive US Open singles championships in 2009 and 2010 before adding an Australian Open title in 2011.

Clijsters physical style often translated well to clay, and she had quite a bit of success in other tournaments, but the French Open continued to elude her. On two separate occasions, Clijsters reached the final at Roland Garros, losing 12-10 in the third set to Jennifer Capriati in 2001 and in straight sets to Henin two years later.

Various injuries forced Clijsters to miss several clay court seasons while she was playing some of her best tennis in the late 2000s. Her last attempt at Roland Garros came in 2011, when she lost in the second round, finishing with a career 23-7 record at the French Open.

Clijsters was an accomplished doubles player as well, becoming only the fifth women’s player at the time to be simultaneously ranked No. 1 at both singles and doubles. She teamed up with Ai Sugiyama to win the 2001 French Open doubles championship.
