9. Boris Becker

One of the best pure serve-and-volley players ever, Becker’s game was more suited to grass and hard court, and he had plenty of success at the other three Grand Slam events. However, Becker never won a singles title on clay, including at the French Open, which would have secured a career Grand Slam.

Becker won six career major singles titles over an impressive run beginning in the mid-1980s. The first of those six championships came as an unseeded 17-year-old at Wimbledon in 1986, a title which Becker would successfully defend the next year. A sweep of Wimbledon and the US Open in 1989, plus two later titles at the Australian Open, cemented Becker’s place as one of the greatest male singles players ever.

Early in his career, it looked like Becker would have plenty of chances to win the French Open. Becker advanced to the 1987 semifinal as the No. 2 seed before being upset by Mats Wilander in straight sets.

He would get that far twice more over the next four seasons, but no further. Even in 1991, the season Becker achieved No. 1 singles ranking status, Becker was unable to get past Andre Agassi in a tight semifinals match.

Becker will now try to help Djokovic break his French Open winless drought as his coach.
