Mets fans were less than warm and welcoming to Chase Utley in his first game in New York since his infamous slide

If there’s a person that’s more hated by New York Mets fans than Chase Utley in this current place and time, you’d be hard-pressed to find out who that is. After the Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman slid way out of the base-path into Ruben Tejada on a now infamous play in the postseason last year, Utley put his name on the hit-list of Mets fans for the foreseeable future. So it stands to reason that Mets fans were less than warm in their welcome to Utley on Friday night in his first game at Citi Field since the slide.

When Utley went to the plate for his first at-bat of the night on Friday, the Mets fans rained down a chorus of thunderous boos from throughout the stadium, showing the veteran no mercy:

While everyone in the crowd—judging by the boos at least—was hoping that Utley would swing and miss in the most glorious strikeout ever, he actually walked to get on base.

Mets fans got their redemption again, though, as Utley tried to steal second and was out by a mile, much to the pleasure of the Mets fans. And really, can you blame them for hating this guy? Not only is he a former division rival, but that slide was such a dirty play that really hurt the Mets. As such, they have every right to be pissed.
