Atletico Madrid suffered heartbreak in the Champions League Final as Antoine Griezmann’s penalty was rifled off the crossbar
Antoine Griezmann had been the most threatening man on the Atletico Madrid squad in the first half of the 2016 Champions League Final as they were looking for an equalizer to Sergio Ramos’ 15th minute goal for Real Madrid. He was shooting, but couldn’t find the net. However, his best opportunity surely came at the start of the second half as Fernando Torres was taken down by Pepe in the box to earn a penalty for Griezmann.
Ever the poised finisher, Atletico supporters and Griezmann’s teammates had to believe that their star was about to tie it all up and really make things interesting. However, as he tried to read the keeper to tuck it into a side, Griezmann was seemingly caught off guard and tried to hammer the penalty into the top of the net. Instead, he rifled it off the bottom of the crossbar for a heartbreaking miss:
"Griezmann misses the golden chance to equalize for Atletico Madrid. Real still lead, 1-0. #UCLfinal @HeinekenSoccer https://t.co/mD08p3WTUP— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) May 28, 2016"
Man, that one has to sting quite a bit if you’re an Atletico fan.
If you’d have told most Atletico supporters that Griezmann would have a key penalty for their side as they needed a goal to tie, they would’ve jumped for joy at the prospect. So to see him miss in that manner has to be wholly frustrating and deflating.
We’ll see if that’s what it was to Griezmann as well or if he can rebound.
