NBA Rumors: 5 coaches to replace Dwane Casey in Toronto
By John Buhler
The Toronto Raptors and head coach Dwane Casey are working diligently towards a contract extension. Here are five replacements if a new deal doesn’t happen.
While ESPN’s Marc Stein reports that the Toronto Raptors organization are leaning towards offering a new contract extension to head coach Dwane Casey, what if general manager Masai Ujiri decides back out at the last minute?
Toronto is expected to offer Casey another contract, but do keep in mind that had his Raptors failed to win in Game 7 of their first round series with the Indiana Pacers that it would be Casey out of his job and not the Pacers’ Vogel.
Vogel found a new place of employment in Central Florida with the rebuilding Orlando Magic, but Casey may have had to wait at least a year for another gig had he failed to beat the Pacers at home in Game 7. That would have been three straight first round exits for Casey as the Raptors head coach.
While it makes sense for Ujiri to bring back the franchise’s most successful head coach to date in Casey, if for some reason Ujiri wants to go in a completely different direction, here are five head coaching candidates he should consider to replace Casey if it ultimately comes to it after a failed attempt at a contract negotiation.
