The respiratory problems that caused his most recent hospitalization are most likely side effects of his Parkinson’s disease. Ali has long been an ambassador for boxing and a role model to male athletes everywhere, especially those of the Muslim faith. He is generally regarded as being one of the greatest boxers of all-time and is certainly in the discussion for being the most influential of all-time.
Ali is perhaps most famous for The Rumble In The Jungle, his heavyweight championship fight against George Foreman in 1974 which saw him reclaim the title that he had been stripped of in 1967 due to his refusal to comply with the military draft during the Vietnam War. Many consider it to be the greatest boxing event in history and the fight that put boxing on the map.
The 74-year-old boxer has struggled with his health since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. It is telling how much support he has received since being hospitalized. He is universally loved and respected for what he has done for boxing and for humanitarian work. Ali has been a constant advocate and mentor for young Muslims and African-Americans. During a time when African-Americans had few athletes to look up to, Ali provided them with one.
