NHL Rumors: Bruins interested in extending Brad Marchand
The Boston Bruins would like to begin extension talks with forward Brad Marchand after a career season.
One of the breakout stars in the NHL for the 2015-16 season is Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand. Marchand became more than just a pest with a career season. He set career highs in goals (37) and points (61) while playing in 77 games as a member of the Bruins’ first forward line. The Bruins would like to get started on discussing a well-deserved extension for Marchand.
“We’re going to look at Brad right away…early on here in the process once we get past that first wave in July,” said Bruins general manager Don Sweeney, per CSN New England. “We’ll have some good discussions. We’d prefer that we’re tracking on the earlier side of things. He’s a big part of our hockey club.”
Marchand has one year left on his deal before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. He is an extremely important member of the Bruins not just because of his offense, but for his defense as well. Marchand and center Patrice Bergeron are highly thought of and many consider them to be the best shutdown line in the NHL.
He will likely command at least a $6 million salary and his average annual value could push $7 million. By comparison, Bergeron has a $6.875 million cap hit. He likely won’t top Bergeron’s contract, but Marchand should at least come close to doing so. Marchand has proven that he’s one of the best players in the league. Now Boston must be sure to adequately pay him.
