Patric Hornqvist scored a big goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins before the second intermission.

Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals has been closely contested. The first period ended 1-1 despite the Pittsburgh Penguins holding a 14-6 edge in shots, but the San Jose Sharks had better success in the second period.

The Sharks held the Penguins to six shots in the second period, and had lots of good chances to take the lead. It looked like the two teams would go into the second intermission deadlocked, but Patric Hornqvist broke the tie with seconds left:

That goal was good for Hornqvist’s eighth goal of the playoffs. The key to Pittsburgh’s success so far in this series has been the contribution of their role players. In the first two games, Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary stepped up, and so far, it’s been Ben Lovejoy that has emerged with his second point of the night.

If the result holds, the Penguins will get a 3-0 series lead which would effectively end the series. There’s only been one team that has come back from that deficit in the Cup Finals, and it was the Toronto Maple Leafs back in 1942. If the Sharks want their season to continue, they will need to play the game of their lives in the third period.
