3. New York Islanders

The New York Islanders are a team that everyone expects to be aggressive this off-season as they try to build a Stanley Cup caliber team around captain John Tavares. They have usually been viewed as the second hockey team in New York behind the Rangers, but a trade for Tyson Barrie would make them legitimate contenders.

One of the things that the Islanders struggled with last season was production from their blue line. Nick Leddy was outstanding, and Travis Hamonic provided great value, but Johnny Boychuk had a sub-par year by his standards, and the Islanders struggled to get offense from their blue line outside of Leddy. Specifically, their power play lacked a competent quarterback. Tyson Barrie would be an excellent fit with the Islanders, giving them a very productive defenseman who is one of the better power play quarterbacks in the NHL.

What would it cost the Islanders to get him? It would likely cost them a high draft pick and at least one prospect, probably two. A package revolving around a second round pick, Ryan Strome and Josh Ho Sang could make sense if the Avalanche aren’t looking to get a blue-liner in return for Barrie. If Colorado wants a blue-liner in return, Calvin de Haan would make sense.
