Two former Major League Baseball stars will lead the future of the league in this year’s Futures Game.

Trevor Hoffman and Moises Alou, who combined for 13 All-Star Game selections as players, will manage the All-Star Futures Game this year. Hoffman will be the manager of the U.S. Team, while Alou will man the World Team. Both players currently work for the San Diego Padres, who will host this year’s game.

Hoffman, who is currently Senior Advisor of Baseball Operations for the Padres, played most of his 18-year career with the organization, and is currently second all-time in saves in Major League history with 601. He was a seven-time All-Star, and helped lead the Padres to the 1998 National League Pennant. He will also be honored with a bobblehead giveaway during All-Star Weekend.

“To have the main event in your own city, it’s an honor,” Hoffman told MLB.com. “If there’s an opportunity to maybe pass along some knowledge and maybe help a kid get comfortable … we’re talking about kids that are close and that are going to make an impact at the big league level — so to have an opportunity to be around them is fabulous. And to represent the Padres and San Diego itself at the Midsummer Classic, it’s pretty special.”

Alou, who currently serves as a Special Assistant of Player Development for the Padres, was a six-time All-Star during his time in the big leagues, winning the 1997 World Series as a member of the Florida Marlins. The owner of 332 career home runs, Alou is baseball royalty, and his father Felipe won 1,033 games a manager.

“I never managed before, but right away I jumped at the opportunity, because I know how big it is for these young, talented players being in this game,” Alou told MLB.com “I just wanted to be a part of it.”

Last year, the U.S. Team defeated the World Team 10-1, giving them six straight wins in the series.  Kyle Schwarber was named the game’s MVP, as his two-run triple gave the U.S. Team a lead they would never relinquish. The game debuted in 1999, and since it’s inception, the U.S. Team has an 11-6 record.

The 2016 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game will be played at Petco Park in San Diego on July 10, with first pitch slated for 4 pm PT.

Rosters and coaches have yet to be announced, but the game will feature the best young players in Minor League Baseball.
