NBA Rumors: 5 free agency destinations for Jeremy Lin
By John Buhler
If Lin views himself as a starting point guard in the NBA, perhaps his best opportunity to lead a team is with the hapless Philadelphia 76ers. Philadelphia seems ready under new leadership to get out of the Marianas Trench of power tanking by aggressively looking for point guard upgrades through either trades or free agency signings.
The 76ers, though very bad, do have some interesting frontcourt players already on their roster like center Jahlil Okafor and power forward Nerlens Noel. Dario Saric is expected to come play stateside in 2016-17 and maybe Joel Embiid’s fragile body is finally ready for some NBA action?
Let’s not forget that the 76ers own the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft where it is widely assumed that new general manager Bryan Colangelo will select LSU Tigers small forward Ben Simmons with that pick.
In short, the 76ers seem to be building their roster from big to small and will find somebody to run the point for head coach Brett Brown’s team. Lin has been a starter for the Knicks, Rockets, and Los Angeles Lakers before, so he’s certainly capable of starting for a 76ers team that used Ish Smith and T.J. McConnell in that role in 2015-16.
Philadelphia will still likely be the worst team in the NBA in 2016-17, but do expect that the 76ers will do better than the 10-72 record they boasted last season. Since Philadelphia does have a salary cap floor to reach, they might overpay Lin to start at point guard for them in 2016-17 and may win close to 20 games because of his arrival and the team’s overall maturation process.
