New Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson is excited about the possibilities with RB Darren Sproles.
After being under-utilized by the old regime, Philadelphia Eagles new head coach Doug Pederson is extremely excited about the opportunity to feature running back Darren Sproles in his offense.
According to Paul Domowitch of the Philadelphia Daily News, Pederson said that Sproles is, “a big part of what we do offensively,” in 2016. Pederson also compared featuring Sproles to the situation he had as the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs.
In Kansas City, Peterson featured running back Jamaal Charles as a weapon in both the run game and as a receiver. He also put together a nice one-two punch at the position of Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware, when Charles went down with a torn ACL last season.
Peterson appears ready to feature Sproles in a variety of ways in the Eagles’ offense and special teams.
“We are not necessarily going to keep him in the backfield. His role will be extensive, both offensively and also on special teams, and I’m excited to kind of get to see what he can do this week a little bit,” Pederson said according to Domowitch.
For whatever reason, former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly never really featured Sproles in a prominent role in his offense. Sproles has game-breaking speed and incredible versatility that seemed to be an absolutely perfect fit for Kelly’s high-octane offense, but the Eagles never fully utilized him.

Sproles is an incredibly talented football player who can help the Eagles’ offense succeed in a variety of ways. His shifty running style makes him a threat to score from anywhere on the field, and on top of that, he is a great route-runner with natural receiving ability out of the backfield.
A weapon who Kelly refused to fully unleash, Sproles appears primed to shine under Pederson in the Eagles’ attack.
