2016 NBA Draft: Most overrated prospects
3. Domantas Sabonis, PF, Gonzaga
Domantas Sabonis is almost unanimously a top-20 pick regardless of what mock draft you look at. But lately, he’s crept into the lottery and even the top-10 in some mocks which is far too high for a player of his caliber.
Sabonis was one of the most dominant and efficient big men in all of college basketball last season, averaging 17.6 points and 11.8 rebounds while shooting 61.1 percent overall from the field and posting a ridiculous 29.3 PER.
But Sabonis stands at 6-10 with a disappointing 6-10.5 wingspan, and he is a below-the-rim player with below-average leaping ability, hindering his shot blocking and rim protecting potential. He’s likely going to have to play the four in the NBA because bigger fives will have no trouble scoring right over the top of him, and his team will get eaten alive at the rim. Despite his above-average footwork, Sabonis often struggles defending and recovering when put in pick-and-rolls.
His short arms and lack of explosion off the floor also hurt him offensively. He struggles to score against longer, more explosive players, and while he does have a solid array of post moves, most involved him using his right shoulder, making his game, at times, predictable and easy to defend.
Sabonis has a motor that never stops running, and that should help him score garbage buckets and grab rebounds, but he has a limited ceiling. My comfort level with him is outside of the top 15.
