High Value SP

Bartolo Colon-New York Mets (7,900): Colon’s hitting heroics aside, it’s been a fun year for the 43-year-old starter in his 19th year in the Majors.  He comes into tonight’s start with a 3.27 ERA and a 4-3 record although his strikeout rate is down from where it has been the last few years.  He’ll take on the Brew Crew in Milwaukee tonight and is a high-risk play tonight although he does have more upside than many of the other options around this price point (aside from the picks listed on the previous slide and Jimmy Nelson).

Jimmy Nelson-Milwaukee Brewers (7,800): Nelson was knocked around in his last start by the light-hitting Phillies allowing six runs in four innings and taking his fourth loss of the season.  His ERA jumped from 2.88 to 3.43 with the hammering and he fell to 504 on the season.  In each of his eight previous starts, Nelson had at least five strikeouts and had turned in four straight quality outings.  I think Friday’s night’s start was a bump in the road and that Nelson will return to form against the Mets as he and the Brewers welcome New York to Milwaukee. He has a tendency to be working around trouble, but he does it pretty effectively most starts especially at home where he is 4-2 with a 2.54 ERA as opposed to 1-2 on the road with a 5.13 ERA. ∗∗∗

Ivan Nova-New York Yankees (7,000): Given the matchups and current form of the rest of the cheap options, I wouldn’t go any cheaper than Nova tonight who takes the hill for the Yankees as they try to close out their four-game sweep of LA. Nova looked goos in his last start throwing six shutout innings before allowing five runs in the seventh.  He still managed to pick up the win against Baltimore and struck out six batters.  He has a good shot at getting a win tonight against the Angels and has pitched decently enough to keep his spot in the rotation for the Yankees this season.  Nova isn’t an elite option, but he will give you money to stock your lineup with plenty of lumber to compensate for his not-so-high ceiling.
